This Week With The Democrats

All Around Town the Same Song

Philadelphia, PA, June 27, 2014:  Stephanie Singer injecting herself (and her staff) into partisan political matters again.  Tartaglione, Matos and Acosta breaking more laws.  Jewell Williams and the new, er old, Sheriff in town.

-       Stephanie Singer was lambasted this week by a Judge of Elections for interfering in a polling place in North Philly.  The accusations included handing out literature, disrupting the election and playing a loudspeaker; couple this with her previous fine paid to the ethics board and the two violations of one of her Chief Deputies culminating with the confiscation of her work computer, Singer has flipped reform on its head and possibly made Philadelphians yearn for the good old days of Marge Tartaglione…well maybe not (see photo at bottom).
-       Speaking of the Tartagliones, Juniata Community Mental Health Clinic, linked with former Deputy Commissioner Renee Tartaglione, her felon husband and Democratic Ward Leader Carlos Matos and Democratic Ward Leader (and mother of Democrat State Rep. candidate) Sandy Acosta, was raided by the FBI for the possibility of Medicaid fraud. Looks like Matos is about to get a promotion from stealing from Atlantic City to stealing from the Federal government.
-       Contrary to the new rules setup for the Sheriff’s Department (you know, the one that doesn’t even have an accounting system to handle hundreds of millions of dollars), Sheriff Jewell Williams has been handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars of contracts with no Law Department approval or going out to bid.  On top of it, they have been going to friends and political contributors.  The new sheriff in town seems an awful lot like the old one.

Joe DeFelice, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Republican Party, stated, “It is absolutely ridiculous we keep seeing the same names in the newspaper of corrupt Democratic Party members; I mean, it is bad enough to see them once, but these are repeat offenders and the same song continues on…”

“Just another week with the Democrats in City Hall.”

Mayor Nutter Supports Old Way Instead of New Day

Philadelphia, PA, June 19, 2014.  A Technical.ly Philly article today reported on why the top employee in Mayor Nutter’s Open Data and Transparency Initiative abruptly quit.
Basically, Mark Headd quit because Mayor Nutter wouldn’t force the Revenue Department to open up data involving property tax balances and kept using old ways of checking for tax deadbeats.

From the article Headd says, “And that was my single biggest frustration during my time at the city — we were constantly using 20th century answers to problems that required a 21st century solution.”

“This is another example of the troubling trend out of the Democrats in City Hall.  Even when they finally elect someone that claims the reformer mantle, they still refuse to fight against the entrenched dinosaurs that want to do everything the old way,” says Joe DeFelice, Executive Director of Philadelphia Republican City Committee.  “Reform isn’t easy and it is even harder when you support Old Way over New Day.”

It’s also a disturbing pattern for Information Technology projects in general for City Hall.
“City Hall has had a very poor track record of being able to implement IT projects as well,” adds Adam Lang, Republican Ward Leader and IT Professional.  “There was the $40+ million water billing system disaster.  Then the Sheriff’s Department, which handles tens of millions of dollars a year, without a computerized accounting system. And how did that municipal wi-fi work out?”

“There are many more examples of IT project failures in City Hall over the years.  If you can’t even get your own Department heads to do what you want, how are you going to lead and control consultants?”

Williams Takes the Baton and is Running with it

Proving that Kane is Not Able

Philadelphia, PA, June 18, 2014.  Today, District Attorney Seth Williams Announced a Grand Jury investigation into several of his Philadelphia Democrat Party Members.  "If crimes occurred here, of this magnitude, of this nature, then we can't be indifferent, we can't put our heads in the sand," Williams said at a news conference as reported on 6abc.com.  He went on to refer to the ‘accused’ which are Democrat State Representatives Ron Waters, Vanessa Brown, Louise Bishop and Michelle Brownlee along with former Traffic Court Judge Thomasine Tynes.  These individuals have been accused of taking cash bribes amongst other gifts from Tyron Ali, a lobbyist who was working on behalf of the State Attorney General in a Sting Operation, and not reporting them on their statements of financial interests.

Philadelphia Republican Party Executive Director Joe DeFelice, who has been critical of Williams in the past for not prosecuting political corruption much like his predecessor Lynn Abraham, today commended Williams by stating “With all these accusations flying around the Commonwealth, how could Williams not look into this; today he did the prudent thing by convening a Grand Jury in this matter.  A lot of the facts of this case have been put forth in the Court of Public Opinion; it is nice to know that DA Williams takes these accusations seriously enough to potentially put them forward to a Court of Law, unlike his Colleague Attorney General Kathleen Kane, who has bungled this from the start and has used weak reasoning such as sex and race for motivation into the sting, clearly ignoring the facts in front of her.  Hopefully, the investigations into JP Miranda’s Ghost Employees and LeAnna Washington’s Birthday Parties, along with this Grand Jury, will begin to clean up the culture that has permeated the Philadelphia Democrat Party.”

Pizza, Pizza

Rep. Bishop: Thank you, Thank you.

Philadelphia, PA, June 17, 2014:  "We're making investments like this across the state so more people will have the opportunity to play a role in Pennsylvania's economic recovery," then-Gov. Ed Rendell said in a 2006 news release touting the disbursement of $1 million in state funds to the Lancaster Avenue Redevelopment Corporation (“LARC”).

Apparently the “more people” he wanted to give opportunity to were the politically connected and ethically challenged.

This week it was published by the Daily News that over $1 million of tax payer money, linked to Gov. Ed Rendell, Rep. Louise Bishop and Mayor Michael Nutter, only brought a Little Caesar’s to the neighborhood into a shopping center named after Rep. Bishop.

This is on the backs of finding out the Democratic administration also handed over millions to J. Whyatt Mondesire to not build housing for low income residents and to not build a football field for children.

“This was one of the reasons why Gov. Corbett scaled down grant programs.  When the Democrats had the Governor’s Mansion, they handed out money to pay back their political cronies with no oversight,“ says Joe DeFelice, Executive Director of Philadelphia Republican Party.  “Those same people really want Tom Wolf to win so they can go back to raiding the cookie jar for phantom projects; it would be a disaster.”

Over the years there have been other instances of grant money run amok in Philadelphia:    Emmanuel Freeman destruction of the Germantown Settlement and ex-Senator Vince Fumo, who had a vacuum cleaner for each floor in each of his houses, are additional high profile examples.

This is the second instance just this year where Rep Bishop has shown to be a taker, first it was receipt of cash from Tyron Ali and now it is this; thankfully it doesn’t appear Reps Vanessa Brown, Ron Waters, or Michelle Brownlee have any projects in the pipeline.

Playing Kick the Can in the Summer

Might as Well Sell PGW to Bail Out the Schools

Philadelphia, PA, June 15, 2014:  Here we go again.  Thunk… Thunk… Thunk...
That’s the sound of City Hall’s annual game of “Kick the School District Can Down the Road”. It’s the time of year where all of the noise coming out of Broad St. is talk of more taxes and one time fixes. It's the standard kabuki dance of doomsday scenarios that tear at parents, students and teachers in the School District of Philadelphia that routinely drive families out of Philadelphia for the semblance of normalcy found in the suburbs.

This year is no different from the others.  We have the sales tax to be raised as well as new taxes on cigarettes and e-cigarettes; anther temporary fix has been to sell school buildings and take out more debt.

Since City Hall is looking to do nothing more than temporary fixes that don’t solve anything beyond the coming school year, maybe they should make life easier for Philadelphians for a change and think bigger and bolder.  Rather than cobbling together debt and school building sales for several little can kicks, go big and use $216M from the PGW sale– the amount requested by Dr. Hite-to cover it all. Thuuuuuunk!

Sure, doing that doesn’t fix anything beyond the upcoming school year, but neither do the City Hall’s current plans.  But at least using money from the PGW sale would eliminate the continuing indignity of looking for loose change in the couch cushions, immediately end the hostage crisis for this year and  finally give parents and kids a summer free of uncertainty.  At the same time Philadelphians will end up with a better run gas company and the city leadership can use the time freed from the usual summer carping and the petty bickering (and of course their vacation) and  actually devise a long term solution for the fiscal health of the school district.
